Jan - Mar 2010 – Culinary Adventures Goes to School
Plating and Presentation Skills for Home Economics Students

Culinary Adventures has conducted many cooking workshops for the education sector, apart from hosting food events for corporate organizations.

During the first term of the school year, the Culinary Adventures team conducted a cooking workshop for the Jurong West Secondary School Home Economics Students. There were a total of 9 classes and the students ranged from Secondary 3 to 5.

Students were taught different ways to style their dishes and plate them creatively. These skills were essential to enhance the presentation of dishes and to boost their grades for their Home Economics Practical Examinations leading up to the N and O Levels.

The students picked up very interesting tips as Chef Irene taught them easy yet exciting ways to dress up their dishes using simple tools like cookie cutters and squeeze bottles and also how to match plates with complimenting placemats. The students also got to learn how to whip up 3 simple dishes such as fresh tomato basil soup, baked chicken lasagna and chocolate  molten cupcakes .

May 2010 - “The Singing Chef” by Irene Jansen and friends
A Culinary Musical Performance

For the first time ever in Singapore, Culinary Adventures presented its debut cooking mini musical titled “ The Singing Chef ” at the Esplanade Concourse in May for four days during the Singapore Arts Festival 2010 as part of Esplanade’s Flipside Programme.

The 30 minute performance witnessed the marrying of cooking and singing infused with a bit of rap all packed into a “chilli padi” of a performance.

Audiences were entertained to four heartfelt songs belted out live by Irene Jansen, her son, Gerard Tan, piano accompanist and songwriter, Julian Wong and her four kitchen singers. The lyrics of the songs focussed around themes such as -cooking is for everyone, not just housewives, joys and sorrows of motherhood, and how to enjoy a cup of Hot Chocolate. These songs are original compositions by Julian Wong  and fruits of inspiration when he attended one of Chef Irene’s cooking demonstrations.

The show was directed by Sinclair Ang and produced by Irene and sister, Audrey Jansen. The stage was transformed into a mobile kitchen set and delectable aromas of Pumpkin Soup, Meatball Spaghetti and Hot Chocolate filled the Concourse as Irene and crew cooked and sang.

During the finale, the crowd participated with a little sing-along and were treated to a humble serving of Irene’s signature Hot Chocolate freshly prepared by our Hot Chocolate baristas.

The event received features on 938Live and The New Paper

June 2010 - “Cooking with Mum”

School Holiday Cooking Workshop for Mother and Child

Culinary Adventures has conducted regular cooking classes for corporate companies and Standard Chartered Bank is one of them.

In collaboration with its Recreation Club committee, we helped organize a “Cooking with Mum” culinary workshop during the June school holidays.  This workshop served as a great opportunity for busy working mothers to bond with their child while whipping up dishes together as a team.

Chef Irene wanted to plan a menu that was fun and child-friendly so that the children could get more involved in the cooking process. She taught the participants how to make Strawberry Sweet Cream Fun Toasts, Teriyaki Chicken Quesadillas and  Lemon Cream Cupcakes.

There were 14 mother/child teams that attended the session and they all had a good time cooking with their kids.
